MAKING AN IMPACT BY LIGHTING UP YOUR WORLD

      Matthew 5:14

Jesus Christ during his earthly ministry, in several instances, declared Himself   as the light of the world. In John 8:12, the Bible says, “Then spake Jesus again unto them, saying, I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.”

In John 9:5 Jesus Christ said, “As long as I am in the world, I am the light of the world.” Also, in John 12:46, He said, “I am come a light into the world, that whosoever believeth on me should not abide in darkness.”

From the Scriptures we have just considered above, it is obvious  and we are also very much assured and convinced beyond every iota of doubt that Jesus Christ is the light of the world, and as the light of the world, He was making so much impacts as found in various portion of the Scripture.

Have you pause a little while and ask yourself, “Why was Jesus Christ talked in this manner? The answer is not far-fetched, it is simply because he has the authority to do so. Matthew 28:18 says “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me”(NLT)

Imagine, nobody ever talked like Jesus! In the world history, for those of us who are history students, we came across those who exhibited autocratic, despotic and military powers et certra , some claimed to be super powers, their reigns were short-lived and their government extinguished on the surface of the earth.

However, today, we can talk like Jesus Christ because the Bible says, “…as He is, so are we in this world” (1 John 4:17). He made us the light of the world— so luminous and radiant! From our anchored Scripture in Matthew 5:14, Jesus Christ says “Ye are the light of the world…..”.

From the various Scriptures we have read so far and as well been deeply encouraged, it behooves on us to light up the world, in other words, “light up your world”. The phrase, “your world” generally refers to the sum of an individual’s experiences, environment, relationship, and perspectives, encompassing the people, places, and things that are important to the person in reference.

Satan may prowl or roam around like a roaring lion, but he can’t run things because he’s darkness and we’re light. Light dispels darkness. Hallelujah!

With this, we are better appreciated on Jesus ‘powerful instruction in Matthew 5:16 when He said, “Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.” Here, Jesus emphasized letting your light shine so brightly until others are inspired to glorify God because of you. Every day, glow with such radiance, brilliance and intensity that your life becomes a testament to God’s glory. In other words, make an impact with your life.

Usually, you would hear people with different excuses while others are complaining that they were not born with “the silver spoon” and for that reason, they are not able to make in life compare to their counterpart who are excelling in their diverse field of endeavours. I want to assure you that it makes no difference now that you are in Christ Jesus. What you have to do is to illuminate the world and showcase the God’s good works through His son, Jesus Christ.

What are these “good works”? They are the works or acts of God; the supernatural and the miraculous. You’re His voice and His hands to reach and bless others. This is the extraordinary life God has called us to live—a life of purpose, impact and influence for His glory, Amen!.

PRAYER

Dear Father, thank you for making me the light of the world. I commit to letting my light shine so brightly that men see my good works and glorify you. I demonstrate your nature and bring glory to your Name. Thank you for giving me a life of purpose, impact and influence, for your glory. I’m enthused by this reality, in Jesus’ Name. Amen.

THE BLESSING OF OBEDEDOM

THE BLESSING OF OBEDEDOM
2 Samuel 6:1-12

INTRODUCTION
To begin with, I will describe Obededom as a man who made room for God and got stupendously blessed- v.12
The Bible records that God blessed Obededom and all his household. This blessing was so visible, that it was reported to King David.

HOW WAS OBEDEDOM BLESSED BY GOD?
In three months, it became the talk of town that the house of Obededom is blessed. One can only imagine, visible, tangible prosperity, unusual favour, protection, incredible joy and celebrations, children doing well, perhaps his family business suddenly broke through. One can only imagine, but it was something people took notice of. But there are three blessings I see here in the scriptures about Obededom, because of the Ark.
1. God blessed his sons- One of the ways God blessed Obededom was in giving him many sons, eight to be exact. 1 Chronicle 26:4-8. Obededom’s sons were men of great ability and able men.
These men were exceptional men of great ability for the bible to recognize them in that capacity. They were “mighty men of valour”. They were men of incredible stature.
2. God blessed his grandsons. Apart from his eight sons, he had a total of 62 men in his family- sons and grandsons.
The bible described these 62 men as “able men with strength for the work”. It is obvious that this blessing was not confined to one generation, it became multi-generational.
Remember, the Ark was only in Obededom’s house for just three months, but the effect of the Ark lingered for possible eternity.
3. God blessed his lineage forever.

CONCLUSION
God’s blessing truly makes one rich and add no sorrow to it. This is in contrast to that of the house of Abinadab for many years with the ark and no visible impact. Also, the same Ark that killed Uzzah, the priest blessed Obededom, a none Jew considered to be an unbeliever or an infidel in Israel.

The little inconvenience we sometimes endure to serve God, may be working for us a far weightier glory that we can ever imagine.

The blessings of God are generational. What you do for God in one generation can keep yielding fruit of blessings in many generations to come.
Like God promised that He would bless up to a thousand generations of those who love and serve Him.

PRAYER
We really need to pray. “Father God, please do not let me miss my day or hour of visitation. Helping to always remember that a right act can lead to a generational blessing. Help me to be willing to be inconvenienced to serve you, so that I will not forfeit a blessing you had reserved for me, in Jesus name we have prayed- Amen!.

ESSENCE OF CAROL NIGHT

CHRISTMAS CAROL NIGHT

HELD AT THE APOSTOLIC CHURCH NIGERIA, JOS DISTRICT, JOS AREA, FCT FIELD

TOPIC: ESSENCE OF THE CAROL NIGHT

DATE:  SUNDAY, 22ND DECEMBER, 2024

BY DCN. BRYNE S.E. EKARA

TEXTS: Mt. 1:21

INTRODUCTION

The birth of Jesus has long been celebrated in song, and Christmas carols are so well loved now that they’re at the very heart of seasonal tradition.

WHAT IS CAROL NIGHT?

Carol Night is a festive occasion that celebrates the birth of Jesus Christ through the singing of Christmas Carols.

THE MEANING & HISTORY OF CHRISTMAS CAROL

Carol were first sung in Europe thousands of years ago, but these were not Christmas Carols. They were pre- Christian/ pagan songs, sung at Winter Solstice celebrations.

The Winter Solstice is the shortest day of the year, usually taking place around 22nd December.

The word Carol actually means a dance or a sung of praise and joy!

Carols used to be written and sung during all four seasons, but only the tradition of singing them at Christmas has really survived.

Celebrating Christmas

Christmas, remembering the birth of Jesus, then started to be celebrated at the same time as the solstice, so the early Christians started singing Christian songs instead of pre-Christian/ pagan ones.

In 129 AD, a Roman Bishop said that a song called “Angel’s Hymn” should be sung at a Christmas service in Rome.

Another famous early Christmas Hymn was written in 760, by Cosmas of Jerusalem, for the Greek Orthodox Church.

Soon after this many composers all over Europe started to write “Christmas carols”. However, not many people liked them as they were all written and sung in Latin, a Language that the normal people couldn’t understand.

This was changed by St. Francis of Assisi when, in 1223, he started his Nativity Plays in Italy.

The new carols spread to France, Spain, Germany and other European countries.

The earliest carol, like this was written in 1410. Sadly only a very small fragment of it still exists. The carol was about Mary and Jesus meeting different people in Bethlehem.

When the Puritans came to power in England in 1640s, the celebration of Christmas and singing carols was stopped. However, the carols survived as people still sang them in secret.

The most famous types of Carol Service might be a Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols, where carols and Bible readings tell the Christmas Story.

IMPORTANCE OF CHRISTMAS CAROL

Christmas carol are important for many reasons, including:

  • Telling the story of the nativity: Christmas Carols are a way to share the story of Jesus’ birth and the events that surrounded it.
  • Expressing joy and devotion: Carols are a way to express joy, awe and devotion that the nativity inspires.
  • Meditating on Christ: Carols can be a way to meditate on Christ and his role in saving people from sin.
  • Connecting to Scripture: Christmas Carols can be connected to the Scriptures that they portray.

CONCLUSION

Christmas is a day which immortality became mortal so that mortal men can access immortality with God in heaven, where invisibility became visible. The invisible became visible called Emmanuel – God with us. Eternity meet with time. Heaven and earth met. Where the prince of heaven became the savior of the world.

It is a humanoid divinity junction. Christmas is not a moment but a message – a message of God to humanity, not an occasion but a revelation- a revelation of God to humanity.

God of love came to demonstrate the love of God. The Christmas reveals to us the corrective, reparative and restorative nature of God. – Mt. 1:23 – The birth of Christ came to correct, repair and restore the error and travail a man was exposed to as a result of the fall of Adam and Eve.

As we observe the Carol Night and celebrate the Christmas, we should ensure that they are in tandem and in accordance with the heavenly blue print for the season- all about giving and sharing with your love ones even to your enemies- devoid of mayhems, calamities and catastrophes.

HAPPY CHRISTMAS & A PROSPEROUS NEW YEAR IN ADVANCE!

CONNECTING GLORY AND DIRECTION BY WAITING ON GOD

Acts. 13:2

When you wait on God, you are connected to divine direction. Spending time with God has a lot of benefits for the Christians. You don’t lose when you wait on God by spending time with Him. Let us delve in to consider two (2) benefits of waiting on the Lord.

1. Waiting on the Lord is key to divine direction- When you wait on God, you are connected to divine direction.

May be you are at a point in life where you have done all you knew how to do. May be you are at that point when you don’t know what next to do. What to do is to wait on God for direction.

In Acts 13:2, as the disciples of Jesus waited on the Lord and prayed, the Holy Ghost said, “separate unto me Barnabas and Saul for the work I have called them”.

You get direction and clarity when you wait on God. God shows you what to do and how to do it, when you wait on Him.

2. Waiting on the Lord is key to the Glory. The Lord deposits His glory on us when we hang around Him.

When you have stayed with God for a long a long time, by the time you step out, people would begin to notice a different dimension of glory on your life. This was what happened to Moses in Exodus 34:29. Before this time, Moses had camped with God for 40 years. He stayed in the presence of God to the point that a portion of God’s glory left God and rested on him.

When you stay with God, you contact His glory. “When you wait on God, you are connected to divine direction”.

Directives:

i, Be determined to assess divine direction by waiting on God and spending time in His presence.

ii, Desire for a deposit of His righteousness and glory as you spend time in His presence.

Divine declaration:

“Lord, I receive the grace to tarry with you. I ask that you grant me access to divine direction and a deposit of your glory upon my life, in Jesus’ Name”, Amen!.

DEPRAVITY AS A CONSEQUENCE OF THE FALL OF MAN

INTRODUCTION

Man, as created, was good. God created man in His own image, in knowledge, righteousness, and holiness. Well, then, if God created man good, how comes it that all men now are bad? How did sin pass into all mankind? What caused this stupendous change from good to bad? These are the questions that this paper is going to address as we are progressing. The history of the Fall of man is recorded in Genesis 2 and 3. The record of Adam’s temptation and fall must be taken as a true historical account, if we are to understand the Bible at all as a revelation of God’s purpose of mercy.

The doctrine of “original sin” has been associated with the book of Genesis.

THE CONCEPT/ DOCTRINE OF DEPRAVITY

Depravity is a doctrine derived from the concept of original sin. It teaches that, as a consequence of man’s fall, every person born into the world is enslaved to the service of sin as a result of their fallen nature and, apart from the irresistible or enabling grace of God, is completely unable to choose by themselves to follow God, refrain from evil, or accept the gift of salvation as it is offered.

The concept of “original sin” founded in Catholicism as well as Protestantism, generally relies on the belief that human sin and all its components- death, materiality, and finitude- first occurred during the “fall” when the first man and woman (Adam and Eve) disobeyed God and ate from the forbidden tree of knowledge of good and evil. As a result of their disobedience, Adam and Eve are believed from that moment on, to have been doomed to a state of sinfulness.

As the descendants of Adam and Eve, humans were then doomed to inherit that sinful nature, and atone for the crime that Adam and the woman had committed.

AN INDEPTH ANALYSIS OF THE FALL OF MAN

Aside the two Genesis accounts of creation, the first four chapters of the first book of the Bible have dealt with the inception and explanation of humanity’s “fallen” nature. The account in Genesis 3 which is considered as the point of the inception of “original sin.” Genesis 3 is pertinent to this inquiry because it details God’s command to Adam and Eve as well as the infamous exchange between the serpent and the woman and its cataclysmic aftermath.

Though Genesis 3 pertains to the Fall of Adam and the woman, it begins with important information about another one of God’s creatures: the serpent. The serpent is the first character at the beginning of the chapter and the text quickly makes it clear that “the serpent was more crafty than any other beast of the field that the Lord God had made” (Gen.3:1).

This abruptly becomes evident when the serpent asks the woman if God actually told her not to eat from any of the trees in the garden.

She responds that, though God told them to eat from any of the trees in the garden “God [also] said, ‘You shall not eat of the fruit of the tree that is in the midst of the garden, neither shall you touch it, lest you die” (Gen.3:3). It is interesting that God suggests death as a consequence of eating from the tree that is in the middle of the garden in light of how God later deals with Adam and the woman since they do not die at first. Yet it is also significant aspect of the passage that there is no mention of “sin”. Though it is unclear whether Adam and the woman are immortal at this stage, death seems to be the main concern of the text.

It is this concern that the serpent latches onto when he assures the woman that “You will not surely die” (Gen 3:4), a clever half-truth that can be spotted later when Adam’s death is recounted in Genesis 5:5. Instead of promising the woman that she will live forever if she eats from the tree, the serpent explains to her that “God knows that when you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, Knowing good and evil” (Gen 3:5).

The fact that the serpent emphasizes this last point is the most telling and troublesome for the “original sin” interpretation of the story. By promising the woman that she will know the difference between good and evil, the serpent insinuates that she and Adam lack any ability to judge the difference at the time. Therefore, it is hard to argue that Adam and the woman knew that it was evil to eat from the tree when it appears that they did not have the concept of such knowledge, which is in addition to the fact that the serpent was a fellow creature in the garden whom they had no reason to distrust.

MAN’S TOTAL DEPRAVITY – A CONSEQUENCE OF THE FALL

After the creative events recorded in Genesis 1 and 2, Genesis 3 records what theologians call “the Fall.”

“The essence of man’s first sin was his disobedience to the only divine command he had received: not to eat of the tree of knowledge. The consequences of his actions are both physical- toil, pain and death- and spiritual- alienation from God.”  (Gordon J. Wenham, Word Biblical Commentary Volume I, Genesis 1-15).

The consequences of Adam and Eve’s sin goes beyond them to all of humanity, we inherit a sinful nature. The first transgression of man resulted in the total depravity of human nature.

Berkhof states, “The contagion of his sin at once spread through the entire man, leaving no part of his nature untouched, but vitiating every power and faculty of body and soul. This utter corruption of man is clearly taught in Scripture, Gen. 6:5; Ps.14:3,Rom.7:18. Total depravity here does not mean that human nature was at once as thoroughly depraved as it could possibly become. In the will this depravity manifested itself as spiritual inability.” (Louis Berkhof, Systematic Theology).

Every human inherits this corruption; we are all tainted with iniquity from the time we are created.

David says:

“Surely I was sinful at birth, sinful from the time my mother conceived me.” (Psalm 51:5)

The apostle Paul states:

“For I know that good itself does not dwell in me, that is, in my sinful nature” (Romans 7:18) and “to those who are corrupted and do not believe, nothing is pure. In fact, both their minds andconsciences are corrupted.” (Titus 1:15)

As Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn wrote, “If only there were evil people somewhere, insidiously committing evil deeds, and it were necessary only to separate them from the rest of us and destroy them. But the line dividing good and evil cuts through the heart of every human being.” (The Gulag Archipelago).

Although Theologians insist that the image of God in humanity has not been annihilated because of sin. Wayne Gruden wrote: “After the fall, we are still in God’s image- we are still like God and we still represent God- but the image of God in us is distorted; we are less fully like God than we were before the entrance of sin.” (Grudem, Systematic Theology).

The image of God gives humanity the “cultural mandate.” But how does the Fall affect humanity’s ability to accomplish this mandate?

Sin corrupts or pollutes the imago Dei, but humans are still capable of doing those things we are mandated to do- to “be fruitful,” “increase in number,” “fill the earth, “subdue it,” and to “rule” over the rest of creation.

Humans still procreate and create communities in order relate to fellow humans, but they cannot relate to God at all or to other people very well without the grace of god through Christ.

Humans still rule over the non-human creation, but they do so with selfish intent, often exploiting the goodness of God’s creation.

Humans still work, but their work is marked by “painful toil,” “thorns and thistles,” and “the sweat of the brow” (Genesis 3:17-19).

SOLUTION TO DEPRAVITY- THE CONSEQUENCE OF THE FALL OF MAN

God obviously knows that it was necessary to allow the fall of man. In His foreknowledge, infinite wisdom, and Sovereignty, all things will work together for good and for the glory of God.

Answering a question from His disciples about “a man blind from birth,” “Jesus answered, “Neither this man nor his parents sinned, but this was so that the works of God might be manifested in him.” – John 9.

Commenting on these words, John Charles Ryle (Evangelical Anglican) well remarked:

“A deep and instructive principle lies in these words. They surely throw some light on that great question, the origin of evil. God has thought fit to allow evil to exist in order that he may have a platform for showing his mercy, grace, and compassion.

If man had never fallen, there would have been no opportunity of showing divine mercy. But by permitting evil, mysterious as it seems, god’s works of grace, mercy, and wisdom is saving sinners have been wonderfully manifested to all his creatures.

The redeeming of the church of elect sinners is the means of “showing to principalities and powers the manifold wisdom of God” (Ephesians 3:10).

Without the Fall, we should have known nothing of the Cross and the Gospel.”

CONCLUSION

Although humans’ sinful nature would remain, Christ’s death and resurrection were believed to be the solution to this problem.

THE HOLY SPIRIT AS THE ADMINISTRATIVE AGENT OF THE CHURCH

WHO IS THE HOLY SPIRIT?

The Holy Spirit is truly God and he has the distinguishing characteristics of personality.

The deity of the Holy Spirit is established by His characteristics, His relationships with other persons in the Trinity, the divine names that are given to Him, and the works which he performs.

THE PERSONALITY OF THE HOLY SPIRIT –

The Essential Components of Personality

There are three (3) components of personality:

  1. Intellect ( the ability to think)
  2. Sensibility (the ability to feel) and
  3. Will (the ability to make decisions)

The Bible clearly speaks to us concerning the personality of the Holy Spirit. In his masterful discourse on life through the Spirit, the apostle Paul concludes by referring to the “mind of the Spirit” (Romans 8:27), which identifies the intellectual faculty of the Spirit. The apostle also ascribes sensibility to the Spirit (Romans 15:30). That is, he refers to the Spirit’s ability to feel- in this case, to feel love, and His ability to express feeling. Finally, the apostle speaks to Corinthians believers about the sovereign actions of the Holy Spirit as he demonstrates the faculty of will, giving gifts to believers as He determines or wills- (1 Corinthians 12:11). These Scriptures show that the Holy Spirit possesses the essential qualities of personality.

HIS CHARACTERISTICS OF DIVINE NATURE

The Holy Spirit possesses the characteristics of divine nature. For example, He is eternal- that which is without a beginning, or ending, or limitation- Hebrews 9:14.

The Holy Spirit also has the following characteristics:

  1. He is everywhere- present (omnipotent). The Psalmist David declared, “Where can I go from your Spirit?” “Where can I go from your presence?”- Psalm 139:7-10.
  2. He is all-knowing (omniscient)- Paul, in describing this divine characteristics to Corinthian believers, observes that “no one knows the thoughts of God except the Spirit of God”- 1 Corinthians 2:11. Moreover, He who knows the thoughts of God also knows the will of God and he enables us to pray according to the will of God- Romans 8:26-27.
  3. The Holy Spirit is all- powerful (omni-potent). That is, He has the power and ability to bring about everything God wills, without any limitations- Luke 1:35; Acts 1:8

THE HOLY SPIRIT: A WISE ADMINISTRATOR

Jesus said to His followers in John 16:7- “It is for your good that I am going away”. It was because He was limited in His humanity and could be in only one place at a time. However, He knew that when the Holy Spirit came to replace Him, there would be no limitations on the time He could stay or in the work that He could do.

Thus, through the Holy Spirit, God not only commissions the Church with works, but also stays with the Church and enables it to get the works done. More than this, the Holy Spirit takes up residence in the Church and gives it guidance, fellowship, comfort, and enablement for all the spiritual needs.
